I also went to wikipedia for five factoids:
*five = the 5th Fibonacci number
*equations of degree 5 and higher cannot generally be so solved
*Five is also the number of Platonic solids [Tetrahedron, Cube (or hexahedron), Octahedron, Dodecahedron, and Icosahedron (here's a pic: [link])...and check out farther down the page how they were associated with the 5 Greek elements
*the Pentagon

Interestingly for fontography: "While the shape of the 5 character has an ascender in most modern typefaces, in typefaces with text figures the character usually has a descender, as, for example, in:" number under 'Evolution of Glyph'.
I remember when studying paleontology how pentaradial symmetry of echinoderms was mystically astounding...I was a bit obsessed with crinoids...though I don't remember learning the following (though I may have forgotten it?):
"Although adult echinoderms possess pentaradial, or five-sided, symmetry, echinoderm larvae are ciliated, free-swimming organisms that organize in a bilaterally symmetric fashion that makes them look like embryonic chordates. Later, the left side of the body grows at the expense of the right side, which is eventually absorbed." [link] Maybe this is why most people are right-handed, since our left side dominates, including the left side of the brain, back to some sort of echinoidal pentaradial evolutionary precursor?!?
